What is the difference between data and information?

The terms data, information and knowledge are often used loosely and as though they are interchangeable.

Whatever the detailed definitions, they represent a spectrum ranging from single facts, numbers etc (data), through more meaningful concepts that contain facts (information) in a given context, to concepts that comprise real reasoning (knowledge) , which allows new information to be generated.

This module is concerned with the exchange of data and information. The terms used will vary throughout in an attempt to conform to commonly accepted practice.
